Born in Ballarat, Robert Edward Hayes was a married 29 year old clerk when he enlisted in Broad Meadows, Victoria on the 15th of July 1915 as a Second Lieutenant. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A71 Nestor on 2 October 1916.
On the 10th of February 1917 Robert was taken on strength with the 14th Battalion.
He was promoted to Lieutenant on the 18th of April 1917.
On November 7th 1917, Robert was mentioned in the despatches.
He returned to Australia on the 20th of August 1919 and his appointment was terminated on the 4th of October 1919.
