Biography

Albert Ernest Victor Thomas (SN 497) was born at Ascot and educated at Ascot State School. A farmer at the time, he was amongst the first to enlist in August 1914. Attached to the 4th Light Horse Regiment, he sailed aboard the Wiltshire in October. At Gallipoli in July 1915 he sustained a shrapnel wound to his leg and was evacuated to Malta and then on to England. Once recovered, he served at the AIF Post Office in London then at Alexandria in Egypt. In 1918 he rejoined his light horse regiment in Syria and was wounded near Damascus on September 30th. While recovering from a wound to his forearm he contracted influenza which claimed his life on October 21st 1918. He was 30 years of age and is buried in the Cairo War Memorial Cemetery.
