Albert Joseph Pobjoy was born in Ballarat and was a Malster living on 301 Darling Street, South Ballarat when he enlisted in the 31st Battalion, 2nd Reinforcement on 4 October 1915 at the age of 19. His unit embarked from Brisbane, Queensland, on board HMAT A55 Kyarra on 3 January 1916. It is reported that he was admitted to hospital suffering from shell gas burns to the right foot and aside from a bout of illness and more than one issue of being absent without leave he completed his tour of duty without major incident, illness or injury. He returned home to Australia from England aboard the City of York on 14 January 1919.
