Biography

Arthur Charles Wisby (SN 4622) was born in Creswick but attended Ballarat’s Macarthur Street State School. He enlisted in Ballarat on July 19th 1915. He was 18, single and worked as a packer. He was drafted to the 8th Infantry Battalion and embarked from Melbourne in January 1916. On arrival in Egypt, he was transferred to the 58th Infantry Battalion before moving to France in June. On July 19th 1916 he was wounded in action at the tragic charge at Fromelles. He was evacuated to hospital in England for treatment to a gunshot wound to his leg. He rejoined his unit in France in late November, but on February 2nd 1917 he was killed in action. He has no known grave, and his name is recorded on the Australian Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France.
