Biography

Stanley Crawford Gates (SN 82) was born in Leigh Creek and enlisted on August 21st 1914 at Ballarat East. He was single, 25 years old, and an agent. He was a Corporal in 8th Infantry Battalion and suffered a gunshot wound at Gallipoli. He was evacuated to hospital in Egypt where he recovered, and he rejoined his unit at Gallipoli two months later. He had moved on to France when he became ill with a high fever. He was evacuated to the 24th General Hospital, in the rear area, but died on March 12th 1917 of cerebro-spinal fever. He is buried in the Etaples Military Cemetery, France. He was 28 years of age.
