Allen Thomas Clegg was born in Ballarat and was an Architect by trade when he enlisted in the 46th Battalion on 19 July 1915 at the age of 18. He trained with the 20th Depot Battalion at Castlemaine then with 5th Battalion reinforcements before his unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A32 Themistocles on 28 January 1916. Upon arrival in Egypt he was transferred to the 46th Battalion, but soon after, ill health interrupted his training for active service. In early May 1916 he was admitted to the 1st Australian Stationary Hospital suffering from tonsillitis, but this was followed by diphtheria and pharyngitis and by late June it was decided he should return to Australia. He sailed from Suez on July 5th aboard the Karoola, reached Melbourne a month later, and was discharged in September æmedically unfit – acute nephritis'. He died in July 1923 aged 26.
