Biography

Harold McKenzie (SN 86) was born in Ballarat where he enlisted as a 23 year old draper on August 21st 1914. Assigned to the 8th Infantry Battalion he embarked from Melbourne aboard the Benalla on October 19th and sailed to Egypt. On April 25th 1915 he took part in the Gallipoli landing and served there for seven months until illness forced his evacuation in December. He moved on to France in June 1916 but his service from then on was dotted with short illnesses, injuries and discipline issues in France and England. On May 3rd 1918 he suffered the effects of a lightning strike and later that month he was arrested outside a café in France and charged with striking his superior officer and resisting an escort. He was found guilty and sentenced to 12 months in detention. The remainder of his sentence was remitted in March 1919 and he returned to Australia on the Port Darwin. He disembarked at Melbourne on July 27th and was discharged on August 10th 1919.
