Born in Ballarat, Ernest Millist was a single 20 year old gardener at the time of his enlistment on the 19th of July 1915. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A71 Nestor on the 11th of October 1915.
On the 17th of May 1917, he was accidentally injured on duty. He rejoined his battalion on the 12th of November 1917.
On the 26th of October 1918, Ernest was gassed. He rejoined his battalion on the 24th of November 1918.
He returned to Australia on the 31st of May 1919, and as discharged on the 4th of August 1919.
