Biography

John Frederick Allen Soderstrom (SN 3149) was born in Ballarat where he attended Urquhart Street State School. He was single, 20 years of age, and a woollen mill employee, when he enlisted on July 10th 1915. He joined the 8th Infantry Battalion and embarked from Adelaide in late September on board the Osterley. He was transferred to the 58th Infantry Battalion before reaching France in June 1916. He was wounded at Fromelles only a few weeks later, suffering a gun shot wound to the ribs, and spent much of the next six months in hospital recovering from that injury and with additional admissions for myalgia. Barely a month after rejoining his unit, on February 2nd 1917, he was killed in action. He is buried in Bancourt British Cemetery, France.
