Biography

Charles Morris (SN 107) was born in Melbourne and was a 24 year old woodcutter when he enlisted in Ballarat on August 21st 1914. Assigned to the 8th Infantry Battalion, he embarked from Melbourne aboard the Benalla, and sailed to Egypt before landing at Gallipoli. Influenza caused him to be evacuated from Gallipoli in July 1915. His family experienced deep anxiety in early 1917 when they were incorrectly advised that he had been killed in December 1916. He was wounded in September 1917 in an action that earned for him the Military Medal. 'During the fighting at POLYGON WOOD east of YPRES on 20th September, 1917, Pte. MORRIS' work was exceptionally good. He displayed wonderful coolness and bravery in digging out a buried comrade after he himself had been severely wounded. He set a splendid example to the other men in his Section.' His time in hospital was not without incident as he was charged with breaking out of hospital, insolence to an officer and using threatening language to an NCO which together caused him to forfeit 10 days pay. His injury, a gunshot wound to his left shoulder, ended his active service and he was returned to Australia on the Argyllshire as far as Cape Town, then the Osterley to Melbourne where he disembarked on April 13th 1918. He was discharged as ‘medically unfit, wounded’ on May 18th 1918.
