Biography

Arthur Edward Fields (SN 4486) born in Sydney, was a 19 year old bicycle mechanic when he enlisted in Ballarat on July 20th 1915. He embarked aboard the Themistocles and sailed to Egypt where he was assigned to the 58th Infantry Battalion. While in Egypt, in June 1916, he was disciplined for attending a school of gambling. He moved to France where, in November 1916, he suffered a severe gunshot wound to his thigh that resulted in his return to Australia. He returned aboard the Barambah and was discharged ‘medically unfit’ on July 27th 1917.
