Biography

Frank Ryan was born in Ballarat East, Victoria, was single and a Miner when he enlisted in the 24th Battalion, 5th Reinforcement on 20 July 1915 at the age of 20. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT RMS Osterley on 29 September 1915, transferring to the 15th Brigade 5th Infantry Division on 4 April 1916. In August 1916 he joined the 58th battalion and in February 1917 he was admitted to hospital, suffering from haemorrhoids. Unfortunately, this issue would result in multiple admissions to hospital throughout 1918/1918. However, it would be inflamed soles of the feet which would result in his transfer to England on 10 December 1918 for return to Australia.
