Norman William Nice was born Ballarat and was a Printer by trade when he enlisted in the Field Ambulance 10 on 9 July 1915 at the age of 23. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A54 Runic on 20 June 1916. In January 1917 he crossed to France and in July he transferred from the 10th Field Ambulance to the 3rd Australian Casualty Clearing Station. He had the good fortune to serve through the war without major illness or physical injury, and he returned to Australia as a member of the nursing staff on the Zealandia, disembarking at Melbourne on June 28th 1919.
