Biography

Edmond Christian Doepel (SN 10206) born in Ballarat, was a 20 year old clerk when he enlisted in Ballarat on July 6th 1915. He trained with the Medical Corps then embarked aboard the Shropshire on March 21st 1916. In August he commenced service on the Western Front with the 2nd Field Ambulance. During his service he was disciplined for failing to salute an officer and for disobeying corps rules but the highlight of his service was the award of a Military Medal for bravery in the field in Belgium in May 1917.He returned to Australia as a member of the nursing staff aboard the Dongola, disembarked at Melbourne on May 16th 1919 and was discharged on June 30th.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Edward E. Doepel.
