Biography

Charles Walsh Orr was born at Horsham, Victoria on 13 August 1896. He became a Post office employee, and at the age of 19 and being single enlisted for the adventure of a lifetime at Surrey Hills, Victoria on 21 August 1914. After basic training his unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board Transport A24 Benalla on 19 October 1914. He embarked to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, Gallipoli Campaign at Alexandria on 5/4/15. His War service included Egypt, Gallipoli, Western Front. He was admitted to hospital with blistered feet and Diarrhoea in Imbros (Aegean Sea) near Turkey 20/5/15. He also sustained a bruised thigh and some eye trouble around the 5/9/15. On the 20/8/16 he was detached from 1st Aust Div Hdqrs and transferred from 8th Battalion to 1st Mobile Vet Section A.I.F. France. He returned to Australia 24 August 1918. Tree No. 173
