Donald McKenzie Cameron (SN 3714) was a 22 year old woollen mill employee from South Street Ballarat when he enlisted in Ballarat on August 30th 1915. He trained with Ballarat’s 14th Depot Battalion before transferring to the 46th Battalion. On November 23rd he sailed from Melbourne on the Ceramic and reached Egypt in early February 1916. He was constantly troubled by illness and in May 1916 he was admitted to the 1st Australian Stationary Hospital suffering from bronchitis, synovitis in the right knee and delusions. It was determined that he was not fit for active service, so he was returned to Australia aboard the Seang Choon, disembarking at Melbourne on August 18th. He was discharged two months later as ‘medically unfit – debility, mental deficiency’. He died in May 1973 at the age of 80.
