Biography

Donald McKenzie Cameron was born in Cardigan, just outside of Ballarat, and was a Woollen Mill by trade when he enlisted in the 14th Battalion, 12th Reinforcement on 30 July 1915 at the age of 22. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A40 Ceramic on 23 November 1915. He reached Egypt in February 1916 and was constantly troubled by illness and in May 1916 he was admitted to the 1st Australian Stationary Hospital suffering from bronchitis, synovitis in the right knee and delusions. It was determined that he was not fit for active service so he was returned to Australia aboard the Seang Choon, disembarking at Melbourne on August 8th .
