George Victor Osborne (SN 4984) was born at Haddon and attended Ballarat’s Urquhart Street State School. Married to Ruth, he was a 28 year old labourer when he enlisted in Ballarat on July 22nd 1915. He was posted to the 14th Infantry Battalion and embarked for the battlefields in March 1916 on board the Anchises. He arrived in France in July but was killed in the fighting at Pozieres on August 29th 1916 and, with no known grave, his name is recorded on the Australian Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France.
