Biography

Henry Haines Sutherland (also listed as Henry Holmes) was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, was single and a Farmer living in Ballarat, Victoria when he enlisted with the 14th Battalion, 12th Reinforcement on 22 July 1915 at the age of 21. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A40 Ceramic on 23 November 1915. Whilst serving overseas in France he was hospitalised for Trench Feet and admitted to the 3rd Western Hospital in England. Aside from this illness and an instance of being absent without leave whilst on duty, he competed his service without major incident, illness or injury.
