Michael William Moloney (SN 4744) was born in Sydney and was a 36 year old married engineer when he enlisted in Melbourne on July 23rd 1915. He embarked aboard the Euripides on April 4th 1916, reached England in June and shortly after crossed to France to join the 23rd Infantry Battalion. In November 1916 he was hospitalised suffering from trench feet. This was the first of several short stints in hospital due to various illnesses, although he was able to avoid battle wounds. After the war he left England on May 29th, aboard the Rio Negro, reached Melbourne in mid-July and was discharged on September 5th 1919.
Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Michael W. Maloney.
