Biography

Herbert Frederick Shrubsole was born in Bolwarrah, VIC and was a Labourer by trade when he enlisted from Ballarat in the 21st Battalion, 3rd Reinforcement on 23 July 1915 at the age of 40. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A68 Anchises on 26 August 1915 and joined the 21st Battalion at Gallipoli less than two weeks before the evacuation was completed. He then moved to France where, on August 26th 1916 he was wounded in action. He sustained a gunshot wound to his face and was evacuated to hospital but was able to rejoin his unit in January 1917. In October 1918, just a month before the war ended, he was transferred to the 24th Battalion. He returned home on the Trasos Montes and disembarked at Melbourne on May 22nd 1919.
