His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A7 Medic on 20 May 1916 and came ashore at Plymouth on July 18th. Two months later, in September, he joined the 3rd Australian Casualty Clearing Station in France. Little is recorded of his time in France.
