Biography

Walter Transton Owen (Owens per AIF) was born in Ballarat and was a Salesman when he enlisted in the Field Artillery Brigade 2, Reinforcement 14 on 23 July 1915 at the age of 23. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A32 Themistocles on 28 January 1916. On 19 September 1916 he was admitted to Hospital as accidentally injured, synovitis of the left knee. According to record he was on-duty at the time and Owen was not to blame for the injury which 'one of trivial nature and which will not in all probability interfere with his future effectiveness as a soldier.' He finished his tour without further incident and returned to Australia aboard the Mahia on 4 June 1919.
