Born in Ballarat, Percy Herbert was a single 19 year old labourer when he enlisted in Ballarat on the 24th of July 1915. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A16 Star Of Victoria on the 10th of September 1915.
On the 6th of February 1917, Percy was accidentally injured in an explosion. On the 1st of March he was admitted to the 3rd London General Hospital with a gunshot wound to his left leg.
He returned to Australia on the 31st of December 1917 and was discharged as medically unfit on the 17th of August 1918.
