Ernest William Spark was born in Ballarat East, Victoria, was single and a Driver when he enlisted with the 21st Battalion, 3rd Reinforcement on 24 July 1915 at the age of 18. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A68 Anchises on 26 August 1915. He was wounded in action whilst in France with a gunshot wound to the shoulder, listed as ædangerous'. He re-joined his unit from Hospital on 17 May 1917 and was transferred to the 24th battalion from the 21st. The gunshot wound proved to be severe, resulting in a medical discharge on 21 October 1919.
He was awarded the Military Medal in France in March 1917 for bravery in the field.
