Biography

Theodore Brandenburg (SN 2580) was a 23 year old butcher from Eastwood Street Ballarat when he enlisted on July 14th 1915. He embarked from Melbourne in August 1915, aboard the Anchises, bound for Gallipoli as a 6th Battalion reinforcement. It is unclear if he landed on Gallipoli, but in late October he was hospitalised at nearby Mudros on the island of Lemnos suffering from enteritis. He was transported to hospital in England, and while recuperating spent time at the 5th Division Grenade School of Instruction. He was transferred to the 59th Battalion but in January 1917 he was hospitalised with influenza. Promoted to Sergeant, the last 18 months of the war saw his time split between service in England and France. He returned to Australia on the Port Macquarie in March 1919.

His brother Heinrich also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Theodore Brandeburg.
