Aubrey Simmons was born in Ballarat, Victoria, was single and a High School Teacher when he enlisted with the 3rd Australian Casualty Clearing Station on 24 July 1915 at the age of 25. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A7 Medic on 20 May 1916. He was attached for duty with the 1st Anzac in France on 13 January 1917 and was later detached for duty with the AIF in London on 10 April 1919. He was eligible for return to Australia, embarking from the UK aboard the Wahehe on 2 November 1919.
