Biography

John Bryan Cuthbert (SN 48) was born at Ballarat and attended the Ballarat Grammar School. At the age of 20, while an agriculture student, he enlisted in Melbourne on the August 21st, 1914. After basic training, his ship Hororata sailed from Melbourne in October 1914. He landed at Gallipoli with the 6th Infantry Battalion but was severely wounded. He was evacuated to Egypt and then repatriated to Australia where he was discharged in January 1916 as ‘medically unfit'. He was subsequently commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Royal Air Force and was killed in action on August 28th, 1918. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Arras Flying Services Memorial in France and in Ballarat (New) Cemetery on the grave of his father.
