Arthur Gates was born in Ballarat and enlisted from Ballarat North on 24th July 1915. He was 22 years old, single and a carpenter. He was posted to the 5th Pioneer Battalion with Regimental No. 4787. During his service he was appointed Lance Corporal. He was wounded while in the trenches in front of Mouquet Farm area and died on 28th September 1916. He is buried in Estaires Communal Cemetery, France.
