Biography

Arthur Gates (SN 4787) was born in Ballarat and educated at Macarthur Street State School. He was a 22 year old carpenter when he enlisted on July 24th 1915. He joined the 5th Pioneer Battalion and reached France in June 1916. He was promoted to Lance Corporal just a week prior to being wounded at Mouquet Farm, near Pozieres, on September 28th 1916. He died of his wounds later that day and is buried in the Estaires Communal Cemetery, France. He was 23 years of age.
