Biography

Sydney Alexander Mervyn Hubbard (SN 3555) was Melbourne born but was a 22 year old, unmarried labourer in Ballarat when he enlisted on July 23rd 1915. He was drafted in the 5th Infantry Battalion and sailed from Australia on board the Nestor in October. He reached France in June 1916 having been transferred to 46th Infantry Battalion. He was killed in action in the Messines area on June 12th 1917. He has no known grave and his name is recorded on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Sydney R. Hubbard.
