Biography

Edmund Donnelly (SN 4472) was born in Navigators and enlisted in Ballarat on July 26th 1915. He was a 37 year old, married, labourer. He embarked from Melbourne in January 1916 on board the em>Themistocles to serve on the Western Front with the 58th Battalion. He arrived in France in June and was wounded in action just three weeks later, resulting in his evacuation to England. He returned to France in November but was again evacuated to England in March, suffering from trench fever. After returning to France again in June, he was killed in action near Polygon Wood on September 25th 1917. He has no known grave and is remembered on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.
