Thomas Stephen Nicholls (SN 5887), born in Ballarat, was a 19 year old waiter when he enlisted in Melbourne on July 16th 1915. Assigned to the 2nd Division Signals Company he embarked aboard the Themistocles on January 28th 1916. His service was in Egypt and the Middle East where he served with the 2nd Signals Squadron. Several times he was hospitalised due to illness, but he avoided combat wounds. After the war he returned to Australia on the Borda, disembarked on August 29th 1919 and was discharged on October 21st.
