John Clifford Nicholls (SN 5909) born at Ballarat, was a 25 year old barman when he enlisted in Melbourne on July 17th 1915. He trained at the Signal School before he embarked aboard the Themistocles on January 28th 1916. He served in Egypt and Palestine predominantly with the 5th Light Horse Signal Troop and came safely through the war. He returned to Australia aboard the Burma, disembarked at Melbourne on August 29th 1919 and was discharged on October 21st.
Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Clifford J. Nicholls.
