John Frederick Gandy was born in Hawthorn, but enlisted from Ballarat North on 27th July 1915. He was 22 years old, married, and employed as a train examiner. He was posted to the 7th Infantry Battalion, with Regimental No. 3739. Later he was transferred to the 59th Infantry Battalion. He died of wounds received during the fighting at Pozieres, and is buried in the Wimereux Communal Cemetery, France.
