Born in Ballarat, David Oliver was a drover by trade. At the age of 21, he enlisted in the A.I.F on the 20th of July 1915. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A38 Ulysses on the 27th of October 1915. He was reported as wounded in action on the 20th of September 1917 with gunshot wounds to his left leg, face and eye. He was invalided to England on the 28th of September 1917. David returned to Australia on the 7th of June 1918 and was discharged as medically unfit on the 9th of August 1918.
