John O'Bern was a Sapper in the 2nd Field Company Australian Engineers, with Regimental No. 2284. Later he was transferred to 1st Auxiliary Corps Troops Supply Column MSC. He had been born in Ballarat and enlisted there on 28th July 1915. He was 24 years old, single, and an engineer. He was killed in action at Steenwerck on 13th December 1917, and is buried in Trois Arbres Cemetery, Steenwerck, France.
