Herbert Arthur Davis (SN 2625) born in Ballarat was a 23 year old electrical tram conductor when he enlisted in Melbourne on July 31st 1915. Assigned to the 21st Battalion his unit embarked aboard the Moldavia on October 5th. In August 1916 he was hospitalised in France with a gunshot wound to his shoulder. Once recovered he was transferred to the 2nd Machine Gun Company before being transported to hospital again due to tonsilitis in June 1917. In September 1918 he was again transported to hospital in France for illness where he remained until returning to Australia on December 4th of that year for ‘Effort Syndrome', a form of anxiety neurosis. He was returned to Australia aboard the Somerset on January 15th 1919 and was discharged as 'medically unfit' on September 20th.

His brothers Ernest, Edward and Francis also served in the AIF and are honoured with trees in the Avenue.
