Biography

Herbert Arthur Davis was born in Bendigo and was working as an Electrical Tram Conductor when he enlisted in the 21st Battalion, 6th Reinforcement on 3 July 1915 at the age of 23. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board RMS Moldavia on 5 October 1915. He was transferred to the 2nd Machine Gun Company before being transported to hospital as sick on 24 June 1917. On 26 September 1918 he was again transported to hospital in France for illness where he remained until returning to Australia on 4 December of that year for æEffort Syndrome', a form of anxiety neurosis concerning the state of the heart, as a result of palpitation, chest pain, or other symptoms not due to heart disease. Also called cardioneurosis. He was discharged as medially unfit on 20 September 1919.
