John (Jack) Burton Stewart (SN 2800) was Ballarat born and attended the Dana Street State School. He was a 33 year old bullock driver when he enlisted in Ballarat on August 2nd 1915. Assigned to the 23rd Battalion, 6th Reinforcements, he embarked from Melbourne in October on board the Ulysses, bound for the battlefields of Europe. After training in Egypt, he was transferred to the 58th Battalion with which he reached France in February 1916. In March the following year he was detached to the 15th Infantry Brigade Headquarters where he served until October 1918 when he was admitted to hospital with myelitis. He was evacuated to England but his disease resulted in paralysis and he died on April 17th 1919 while awaiting return to Australia. He is buried at the Tidworth Military Cemetery, UK.
