Biography

Leslie James Crossley, born in Ballarat and a Clerk by trade, enlisted as a Corporal with the 8th Infantry Battalion on 22 August 1914 at the age of 27. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board Transport A24 Benalla on 19 October 1914. Cpl Crossley received a gunshot wound to the left leg on 25 April 1915 and was hospitalized in Malta before being transferred to England on 27 June 1915. On 8 August 1916 Crossley was promoted to Lance Sergeant with AFB 213 No. 2, Depot. On 28 March 1918, he transferred back to the 8th Battalion where he remained until embarking for Australia on 8 October 1918.
