Biography

Thomas Michael Hart was born in Mt Egerton, VIC and was a Clerk by trade when he enlisted from Ballarat in the 8th Battalion, 14th Reinforcement on 2 August 1915 at the age of 22. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A32 Themistocles on 28 January 1916. In April 1916 he was transferred to the 46th Battalion and moved with it to France in June. On August 7th he was wounded in action sustaining a æbomb wound to the chest'. He was evacuated to the 14th Field Ambulance but was able to rejoin his unit a month later. In February 1917 he was again hospitalised, suffering from septic abrasions to his hands and feet but after treatment he returned to duty in March. Illness troubled him through the early months of 1918 but he then served out the final months of the war without incident. He returned to Australia on the Devanha and disembarked at Melbourne on June 23rd 1919.
