Biography

Thomas Huntley Ashley (SN 2224) from Dana Street in Ballarat was educated at the Urquhart Street State School. He was trained as a draper but was working as a commission agent when he enlisted as a 24 year old on August 17th 1915. On September 27th he embarked from Australia aboard the Hororata and sailed to Egypt where he joined the 24th Battalion in January 1916. In March 1916 he arrived in France but on August 5th , at Pozieres, he was listed as "wounded and missing". It was not until July 1917 that an enquiry determined he had been killed in action on August 5th 1916. He was 25 years of age. His remains were subsequently identified and he is buried in the Pozieres British Cemetery. His service is also commemorated on the honour board of the Urquhart Street State School.
