Biography

Matthew James Purcell (SN 3905) was born in Ballarat East and enlisted on July 24th 1915. The 21 year old, unmarried labourer joined the 21st Infantry Battalion and embarked from Melbourne in February 1916 on board the Warilda. He arrived in France in July and on November 12th 1916 was killed by an artillery barrage while his unit was in the trenches. He is buried in the AIF Burial Ground Cemetery, Flers, France.
