Biography

Matthew James Purcell was born in Ballarat East and enlisted from there on 24th July 1915. He was a 21 year old, unmarried and a labourer. He joined the 21st Infantry Battalion, with Regimental No. 3905. On 12th November 1916 he was killed by an artillery barrage while his unit was in the trenches. He is buried in the AIF Burial Ground, Flers, France.
