Henry Tudor Richardson was born in Ballarat, was single and working as a railway employee when he enlisted in the 8th Battalion, 14th Reinforcement on 4 August 1915 at the age of 21. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A32 Themistocles on 28 January 1916. In November, while in France, he was transferred to hospital with trench feet where he remained for a month before re-joining his unit on 26 December. His tour from 1917-1918 was uneventful. He was promoted to Lance Corporal in August 1918 and returned to Australia on 8 May 1919 aboard the Devanha.
