Born in Ballarat, Eric Verne Hurst was a single 20 year old boiler attendant at the time of his enlistment on the 5th of August 1915. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A40 Ceramic on the 23rd of November 1915.
On the 18th of July 1918 Eric was married at St. Giles, Edinburgh, Scotland to Grace Wilson whilst on leave. He rejoined his unit from leave on the 29th of July 1918.
Eric returned to Australia with his wife on the 23rd of August 1919 and was discharged on the 17th of October 1919.
