Biography

Josiah Willey (SN 1789A) was born at Stawell but attended Redan State School. He enlisted in Ballarat on March 6th 1916. He was a miner, 38 years of age, and married to Mary. He was allocated to the 5th Infantry Battalion, embarking from Melbourne aboard the Euripides in April. On arrival in Egypt he was transferred to 59th Infantry Battalion before moving to France in June. On July 19th 1916 he was killed in action at Fromelles. He has no known grave and his name is recorded on VC Corner, Australian Cemetery Memorial, Fromelles, France.
