Biography

Terence Richard Hynes (SN 442) was born in Allendale, near Creswick, but enlisted in NSW on August 7th 1915. At the time of his enlistment, he was 24 years old, single and employed as a plumber. He was promoted to Sergeant and posted to the 3rd Pioneer Battalion in March 1916, and sailed from Australia in June on board the Wandilla. During the voyage to Plymouth, he was charged with 'Neglect, to the prejudice of good order Military Discipline' and reduced to the rank of Corporal. In November, he was promoted again to Sergeant and, after a week spent in musketry school, he was posted to France. On June 7th 1917, he was killed in action at Messines and was buried in the Strand Military Cemetery, Belgium.
