Biography

John Preston White was born in Ballarat and was a Clerk when he enlisted in the 8th Battalion, 16th Reinforcement on 10 August 1915 at the age of 22. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A23 Suffolk on 1 April 1916 and spent two weeks in Egypt then, in June, moved to France. In September of 1916 he transferred to the 2nd Brigade Machine Gun Company in Belgium, later known as the 1st Machine Gun Battalion. He was fortunate to avoid serious injury or illness and returned safely to Australia on the Soudan, disembarking at Melbourne on June 29th 1919.
