Frederick (Fred) Edwards was born in Ballarat and was a Horse Trainer by trade when he enlisted in the 14th Battalion, 12th Reinforcement on 12 August 1915 at the age of 30. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A40 Ceramic on 23 November 1915. While in Egypt he was transferred to the 46th Battalion and posted to France as a driver. Apart from a brief hospital stint as a result of accidental concussion, he came through the war without significant physical injury. He returned home on the Armagh, disembarking at Melbourne on May 18th 1919.
