Biography

John Hugh Hives was born in Melbourne and was a Labourer by trade when he enlisted from Ballarat in the 29th Battalion, B Company on 17 August 1915 at the age of 25. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A11 Ascanius on 10 November 1915. In March 1916 he was attached to the 13th Field Artillery Battery and a year later, in March 1917, he crossed over to France. On July 31st he was wounded in action, sustaining a gunshot wound to his left buttock, and evacuated to the 1st Birmingham War Hospital in England. His wound and sciatica led to him being returned to Australia on the Berrima and he reached Melbourne on December 30th 1917.
