John Henry Segrave (SN 3909) born at Ballarat, was a 28 year old labourer from Urquhart Street Ballarat when he enlisted on August 25th 1915. He trained in Ballarat with the 14th Depot Battalion then embarked on November 23rd aboard the Ceramic. While in Egypt he was attached to the 46th Battalion with whom he moved to France in June. While on leave, on May 23rd 1917, he married Edith Bruton at Oxford then soon after returned to France. He became ill in December 1917 and was evacuated to hospital in England where he was diagnosed as suffering from tuberculosis. He sailed from England on March 10th 1918 on the Durham Castle then transferred to the Orontes at Cape Town and eventually disembarked at Melbourne on May 5th. He was discharged as ‘medically unfit – pulmonary tuberculosis’ on November 30th. He served again (SN V361067) in World War 2.
