Claude James Irvine was born in Ipswich, Queensland, lived in Ballarat and was a Driver by trade. He enlisted in the 8th Infantry Battalion at the age of 20. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board Transport A24 Benalla on 19 October 1914. Pte Irvine received a gunshot wound to the right shoulder on 29 June 1915 which resulted in hospitalisation. He rejoined his unit on 19 October 1915. He was again wounded in action on 9 may 1917 during his tour in France and eventually was granted official leave to return to Australia on 3 December 1918.
